The Shards of Eldgrim

Our Eleventh Session

Through the coarse of the last leg of the party’s travel back to Marshal, Dolus tends to the wounds of Baeleth and Glanten as Chase creates scrolls to help the party in the future. Faramond guides the cart with Ivan riding shotgun blindly. After a few days of tentative care, Glanten and Baeleth are back on their feet. Two days out from Marshal, the party’s wagon is quietly being raided as the party sleeps and Baeleth meditates while on watch. Something in the wagon clumsily bumps a pot and awakens Glanten. Glanten sneaks out of the tent to find a group of Kobolds are attempting to steal their belongings. Glanten sounds the alarm catching the Kobolds off guard, and the group reacts with lightning speed. Before the Kobolds had much of a chance to throw as much gear on their backs as they could, nearly half of their group lies dead in the wagon from bolts and arrows. The remaining Kobolds attempt to flee with their stolen goods by jumping out of the wagon. Several of them stumble and lose their footing before scampering away. Though the Kobolds used various tricks with Flash Pellets and Tanglefoot Bags, none of the Kobolds were able to escape the dead-eye marksmanship of the party. The party gathers their belongings back into the wagon, rest up, and head off to Marshal with an early start to their day. In what feels like the blink of an eye, they return to Marshal. They see the devastation the raiding Kobolds and Dragon did not but nearly three weeks ago, but are amazed to see that most of the town has returned back to normal. Some buildings are still left damaged, and many buildings still show signs of fires. As the party works their way into town towards the center where the church lies, the party is recognized more and more as the ones that saved Marshal from Neth’lak. The party is greeted by now-High Priest Sven, Mother Anastasia, and Brother Ben. High Priest Sven escorts the party back to his chambers to recap the journey that the party has been on. The news of the fall of Nyn’Ilrodar weighs heavily on High Priest Sven, but he is happy to see Baeleth as the lone survivor. After the group is debriefed, they all set out on their own for a well deserved break. Ivan’s blindness is attended to in the church, Glanten returns to spend time with his fellow Dwarven brewer at the Song and Swallow Brewery, Dolus shows Baeleth around the human-town and has a good time, Faramond retires to his study to transcribe the events into the town’s historical records, and Chase aids Brother Ben in his apothecary in making a potion to revive Baldric von Bruin. The following day, a crowd gathers around the statue in the plaza and the party is summoned to attend in the revival of the hero. During the ceremony, the salve is applied to the statue of Baldric, but nothing happens. Luckily, Chase recalls seeing in the notes of the old tome that the antidote takes time to react. During the course of the next 24 hours, the party stays at watch in anticipation of Baldric’s return to flesh. Eventually, Baldric returns to normal. Quickly a crowd gathers cheering the praise of the party for returning Bladric to normal, and the hope that Neth’lak will soon be slain once and for all. Baldric is dazed and confused with all the commotion and is quickly ushered back to Sven’s chambers. There, High Priest Sven and Faramond recap everything that has happened in the past 30 some odd years. Baldric finds all of this news and information overwhelming and requests to be left alone to his thoughts to let everything soak in.

In the morning, the party gathers their belongings, wishes Lilliana a fond farewell, and heads back to Nyn’Ilrodar in order to find the road that will take them back to Marshal where Brother Ben awaits for the Mandragora to free Baldric von Bruin from his stony imprisonment. The party arrives back at Nyn’Ilrodar and rests safely among the ruins knowing that it is doubtful that the Neth’lak the Demanding or any of his henchmen will check here to distrurb them. On the following day after leaving Nyn’Ilrodar, they pass by the lake that the Elves of Nyn’Ilrodar used as part of their culture. Glanten remembers passing the lake the first time they passed by and noticing a disturbance in the water. This time, Glanten decides to defiantly disturb the lake though he has heard of the tales of the Lake Guardian from Baeleth. As Glanten relieves himself along the shore of the lake, he is ambushed by a giant white alligator. Baeleth pushes Glanten out of the way and defends the party for them to make a getaway, but the party will stick to the aid of a fellow party member and they defeat the alligator before Baeleth is drug underwater in the jaws of the Guardian of the Lake. Much to the chagrin of Baeleth, the party guts, skins, and gathers the meat of the alligator as the party neared the last of their rations. The party wished to make sure nothing would go to waste, so they backtracked to Nyn’Ilrodar in search of salt to preserve the meat and tan the hide with. Luckily, they managed to find a crushed storehouse among the ruins that did have enough salt to preserve the hide long enough to get it back to Marshal to be properly dealt with. For the third time in the party’s adventure to retrieve the Mandragora Root, they set off from Nyn’Ilrodar to return to the town of Marshal. Several days after leaving the ruins, the party is ambushed midday by a large group of Wortlings, but not near the number that was scene when they first dropped from the Orcwort. During the fight to protect the wagon, Baeleth drops from grievous wounds. Glanten returns the favor of protection and fights off the remaining three Wortlings before they got a chance to carry off Baeleth. Dolus treats Baeleth’s wounds and brings him back from near death.

Our Ninth Session

Once they reach the grove, Lilliana becomes furious and devises a cruel trick with the aid of the party to keep Terestrian from leaving Lilliana’s side again. With the return of her lover, Lilliana gives the party directions to the wild Mandrake. The party leaves behind Ivan, their wagon, and Bessie and Bertha under the watchful protection of Lilliana, and they set out towards the wild grove in search of the fabled Mandragora. Along the way, the party is ambushed by an Assassin Vine that has it’s tendrils set on Roadblock the oxen. The party manages to chop down the menace right before Roadblock would have been made into fertilizer. Shortly thereafter, the party finally makes it to the open grove, but a large gnarled and twisted tree grows in the middle of the grove with large black fruit hanging from its branches. Between the roots of the tree grow the Mandrake! The party probes around the grove to find that the tree in the middle is alive and so are the fruits. Any small disturbance could spell doom for the party. The party mulls over various ideas of how to pull up the mandrake roots. They know that if they’re around when a root is pulled up, they could die if they hear the scream from the root. But if the root screams, it may wake the dormant tree that grows among the flowers. They contemplate a variety of scenarios and decide on one. With some quick thinking and ingenuity, they manage to pull up a Mandrake with a rope at a safe distance. They themselves do not hear the scream of the Mandrake root and recover the root that is tied to the end of the rope, but the scream wakes the living tree and the fruit drops to the ground and buds out into several Wortlings. The party quickly takes off with their prize before the Wortlings are able to find them. The party hastily travels back to Lilliana’s grove and explain to her what they have found. Lilliana has heard of this tree before and tells the party the tale of the Orcwort. She says that the party is lucky that the Wortlings have not found them and they have bought themselves enough time to rest one last night in her grove.

Lilliana the Centaur is emotionally distraught of the rumors that her Satyr boyfriend, Terestrian, is cheating on her. She requests the aid of the party to track down the Satyr and find proof that the rumors are either true or false. In return, she will give the party directions to another grove that grows wild Mandrakes. Lilliana speaks with the forest creatures to find out the last known location of Terestrian, and the party sets off to the general area. On the way, the party encounters a meadow of flowers. In the middle of the meadow is a corpse of unknown types. The party fears a trap and attempts to get the corpse out to identify it with the aid of dragging a rope through the small meadow against the advice of Baeleth. Unfortunately, the actions disturb the meadow, and the flowers turn out to be a Dread Blossom Swarm. The party attempts to run for their lives and end up splitting up into two groups. Luckily, the swarm is dispatched without any completely disastrous results. Eventually, they find Terestrian along a stream in a clearing in the forest in the throws of passion with another. Terestrian’s escapade with a Nymph is quickly disrupted by the party as they manage to capture the Satyr before he can play any tricks, and the Nymph runs away in fear. Though, her beauty is far too much for Ivan the Huntsman, and he is blinded as he gazes upon her bare flesh. Afterwards, the party manages to intimidate Terestrian into leading them directly back to Lilliana’s grove since they lost the innate tracking ability of Ivan.
